Well Stocked Wheel Chair

Reader Stories: The Garden Tools I Could Not Live Without.

From Beeziboy

What Garden Tools Did You Start With?

I started with a rake and a hoe 70 years ago when a neighbor plowed my first garden with a horse drawn plow. I then purchased a single wheeled, hand pushed cultivator to aid in the weeding.

For the time, they did a good job. I still have the hoe.

What are Your Favorite Garden Tools?

As I am 94 years old, my favorite garden tool is my wheel chair with a wire basket containing clippers, trowels and weeders.

These are my favorite tools that I use over and over again.

I also have rigged up a three prong hand weeder to a 4 foot length of 1 inch PVC pipe so I can sit down and weed my garden.

Advice

  • Buy the best tools you can afford. With proper care, they should last a life time.
  • With wooden handled tools, rub them with linseed oil periodically to keep them from splintering.
  • Store the tools inside and never leave them out in the sun and rain.
  • Always clean the tools after use and before storing.
