I Have Always Loved to Put My Hands inthe Soil

Share Your Story: How I Started Gardening.

From Karen H.

My gardens now.

I have a number of flower gardens in our little yard, and I am responsible for a few raised bed gardens throughout the year.

How I share my love of gardening with others?

I like to give away flowers and veggies, plus I collect flower seeds in the fall and share them as Christmas gifts in the winter. I also photograph my gardens and use the photos for crafts.

Who or what inspired me to garden.

My mom was a gardener from the time I can remember. I have always loved to put my hands in the soil; I feel lost if I cannot do this in the spring. I think it's genetic, I really do. My mom must have had a great influence on me; I absolutely LOVE to grow things; always have since I was little, always will.

How I learned to garden.

I think instinctively I loved to garden, but must have watched my mom do her loving chores in her gardens. I also have been an organic gardener since the 70's. I can pull out old issues of Organic Gardening magazine that date back to the early 1970's.

Lessons learned

  • You don't need chemicals; always compost whenever you can, even if it means turning coffee grounds directly into the soil.
  • Weeds are friends too, and so are all insects; there is always something that eats something else for lunch, so don't be so quick to kill off bugs and what you think are pests.
