Plants Used in the Design Combo
1.PHYSOCARPUS Ninebark "Diablo" and RHUS Sumac "Tiger Eyes".
2.(Same palette) False cyprus (Mophead) and HEUCHERA "Palace Purple"
3. Another favorite: Plumbago and annual Profusion Zinnias in orange.
Garden Site Conditions
Well drained soil with some humus added. Zone 5 and above. Full sun to part shade. Some fertilization is needed to keep the zinnias blooming at their best. I like the ones that are like 10-55-5 or anything with a strong second number.
Lessons learned
- When the combos are young plants you may need to add an annual or two as fillers. Once established they really don't need any others; they are stunning all by themselves and quite CAREFREE!
- The perennial plumbagos in Zone 5 are slow to appear and don't really become part of the show until late summer. In the meantime the Profucion Zinnias fill in nicely. Once they are both in full bloom the contrast is very showy.
