Why I Particularly Like this Catalog.

First of all, the inside of the catalog is not in color. They are non-profit and don't use their money for a fancy catalog. The seeds are heirloom variety, untreated, open-pollinated, and unusual. Sometimes you will not find a particular seed anywhere else. There are wonderful descriptions of the seeds they offer, giving unusual character, size, shape, smell, endurance, and so on to a particular plant. If you are concerned how it will do in your growing area, there is usually someone on the phone who can try to help you out. They have many reference books to refer to, are polite and patient with the customer. I love their tools, are hard to find elsewhere. They offer all of John Jeavons' (the master of double-digging), books, "How to Grow More Vegetables" and pamphlets. They offer compost crops, mixes, collections, flowers, herbs, trees, inoculants, and a newsletter, at your request. They are my favorite.

Advice

  • Fall is probably too busy of a time to think about ordering seeds, but if you want a perennial, this is the time to start ordering.
  • They have Remay cloth you can order to cover delicate plants for the winder, or spring, ( or just protection from bugs, those ones that get inside the chard leaves!)
  • Winter is a great time to map out next year's plantings, when you're inside, cozy and warm. There's always more to think about, and a catalog is a great way to get your gray cells cranking.
