It preserves moisture, keeps mud off the paths and it's particularly attractive to spiders. Spiders are your ally in fighting bad bugs in the vegetable garden, so let them be. It's also always nice to have a table in the vegetable garden, to make it feel a little more like a part of the kitchen.
