Greenhouse kits can get you up and running with a hobby greenhouse in a weekend. Of course, the real work starts then. But if you've given buying a greenhouse a lot of thought and you're sure you really want to have a greenhouse, a greenhouse kit might be just the ticket.

The greenhouse kits featured here are mostly beginner models, but they offer a variety of functionality. Before you choose a greenhouse for your needs, I'd recommend reading Before You Buy a Greenhouse, to determine just what those needs are.

This is a really nice hobby greenhouse for the price, if you live in an area where it doesn't snow; It's not going to get you through extreme weather. The frame is reinforced galvanized steel. The siding is just a plastic/polyethelene sheeting. Not the best for insulation, but easy to install It's 3 layers with two 6-mm opaque outer layers bonded over a center polyethelene mesh, for added strength. There is no venting except unzipping the front and rear panels. No foundation is required. Shelving and brackets are sold separately. Measures 10.26'L x 9.30'W x 8'H. Price Range: $199.00 - $419

2. Weatherguard Greenhouse 6Hx6W

Weatherguard Greenhouse 6Hx6W
Here's a somewhat smaller, but sturdier greenhouse. Again, the frame is galvanized steel and is sturdy enough to hang plants from. The siding is 3-layer polyethylene film. The roof and doors are UV proected. Ventilation is provided by zippered screened side vents. No foundation is required. The basic model measures 6.5' H x 6' W x 8' L, but there is also a 12' L model offered. Assembles with an adjustable, not included. Price Range: $217.00

We're still talking about greenhouses for milder climates here, but this little conservatory caught my eye because you don't often see plastic greenhouses with so much style. This is a round conservatory, 10' high and 9' in diameter. The frame is galvanized steel and the siding is polyethylene with rip stop protection. Zippered front door and side windows are screened, for venting. Comes with ground stakes, tie-downs and a shade cover. Easy assembly. Has access openings for a water hose and power cord. No foundation is required. Measures 10' H x 9' W x 9' D. 3 year manufacturer's warranty. $349.00

4. Rion - PolyGreenhouse

Now we're talking about true greenhouses. It's called the PolyGreenhouse because the sheeting is 6 mil polyethylene with 93% light penetration for up to three years. The frame is weather resistant heavy gauge extruded aluminum. Assembly is an "easy lock fastening system", which is supposed to provide a perfect seal, for better temperature and humidity control. 2 extraction vents. A true door, rather than a zippered flap, also improves isulation. Includes ground stakes. The manufacturer says it assembles in 2-4 hours with a phillips screwdriver and pliers. Measures 6x8 or 6x10. $599

5. Rion - Silverline Greenhouse

A step up in the Rion greenhouse line, you still get the galvanized steel base aluminum frame, but the siding is a single layer polycarbonate with glass like clarity and 100% U protection. Panels assemble with the same "easy lock fastening system" as the previous Rion greenhouse. There's a sliding front door and 1 roof ventfor ventilation. The peaked roof gives more head room. Two side shelves and a rain gutter kit is included. Estimated to takes 4-5 hours to assmble. 7 year warranty on frame; 5 year warranty on palels. No foundtion required, but can be added. $699.

A greenhouse attached to the side of a home takes less energy to heat. The galvanized steel and aluminum frame is coated after the holes are drilled, to smooth edges. The base is steel and it bolts together for stability. The thickness of the metal provides an extra 5 inches of head room. to leave no untreated edges behind. Siding is twin-wall polycarbonate, for good insulataion and light diffusion. Measures 76"W x 50"D x 82"H . Because it rests on the side of your house, the surface must be level, for a snug fit. $549.99

7. Gardman Complete Walk-In Greenhouse

Much like the lean-to style greenhouse above, this Gardman greenhouse has a coated galvanized steel and aluminum frame and twin-wall polycarbonate siding. But this model is freestanding. Roof venting. Comes in three sizes: approx. 4x6 ($559.99), 6x6 ($639.99) or 6x8 ($719.99).

A giant leap to a more serious greenhouse. The framing here is heavy-duty aluminim with a baked-enamel finish in green or white. Siding is curved 6mm twinwall polycarbonate. The finished structure is air-tight and draft-free. Ventailation is provided by a solar-powered roof vent.. The screened doors are hinged (right or left), vented and lockable. This model measures 8' 3.25" W x 10' 5.25" D x 7' 7.625" H. Comes in additional sizes and each size is expandable. Prices start at $3,719.00.
