Ideas for Storing and Toting Your Garden Tools

Gardening is easier with the right tools, but there are a lot of them. You need a way to store your garden tools so that they're still handy when you need them. These products will help your organize all your garden tools, so you can find them when you need them. Some even let you take the organizer and the tools with you.

1. Corner Tool Rack (Rubbermaid)

There's nothing worse than having all your garden tools piled on top of each other in the garage and the one you need is on the bottom. There are many ingenious tool racks out there now, so there's no excuse to have to go digging when you need a compost fork. What I really like about this particular rack is that you can tuck it away in the corner. It's designed to hold 30 tools. If you try to cram in more, you're likely to crack the unit. It's made of plastic resin, which is quite strong and rust-proof, but it has its limits. A plus for this unit is it's from Rubbermaid. It does require assembly, but it's easy enough to be done without tools. Dimensions: 32" (h) by 18" (w) by 20" (d).

2. Fiskars Garden Bucket Caddy

Buckets are currently being side-lined by plastic trugs, but there are still a few of us die-hard bucket carriers out there and this caddy is a nice way to combine a weed bucket with a tool caddy - without having to dump all the tools out to use it as a caddy. It's basically a sheet of canvas with a row of nylon pockets, but wrap it around your bucket and you have room for all your hand tools. There's even a pocket with no bottom, so you can put pointed shears in without poking a hole. There's a designated phone pouch and one for your cold drink too. Fits most 4.5 to 6 gallon pails. This is a great way to recycle old buckets.

3. Tubtrug Caddy

Colorful plastic trugs are dotting gardens everywhere and this removable caddy makes them even more functional. It's a neoprene backpack for your trug that has room for 5 hand tools, a water bottle and phone. The pockets close with velcro. It's waterproof and attaches easily and quickly with hooks, so it's not always moving around. If they could just find a way to be able to sit on a trug, I might just consider giving up my garden bucket. Approximate dimensions: 15-1/2" (W) x 9-1/2" (H)

This isn't going to clear out your garage, but it's great for small spaces. The 2 ends hold long or short-handled tools. You have to nest them, but you can easily fit 6 tools on the rack. There's a small shelf and a wire basket for holding hand tools. The basket is removable, so you can take it with you out into the garden. The whole unit is made of steel coated in an epoxy finish, which isn't supposed to scratch your walls, but I always manage to at least make a smudge. It comes fully assembled and ready to mount on a wall. Mounting hardware is included. Approximate dimensions: 9" (H) x 20" (W) x 7.5" (D).
