It used to be a challenge to keep your garden in bloom all season. Now it seems the plant breeders are determined to meet that challenge head on. First there was 'Endless Summer'. A mophead hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla) that bloomed on and off all season. It bloomed on old wood and newly grown wood, so it didn't matter when or even if you pruned.
Joining 'Endless Summer' are three more continual bloomers: 'Forever & Ever', 'Forever & Ever Red' and 'Forever & Ever Double Pink'. All of these Hydrangea macrophylla bloom on new wood. So even if your hydrangeas get killed back to the ground in the winter, they will still bloom for you next year.
As with any new introductions, the Forever & Ever series is still being performance tested, but they do show great promise. The Forever & Ever hydrangeas also do quite well in containers. These hydrangeas sound like a great choice for northern gardeners who are tired of wondering why their hydrangeas do not bloom.
