Seeds for the 2008 All America Selection (AAS) Winners should be available in stores and catalogs this spring, so it's time to take a look. AAS was created back in 1932 as a way to test and market new flower and vegetable varieties and then let home gardeners know which new introductions were actually worth trying. Some turn out to be all stars, like Kentucky Blue Pole Bean Petunia F1 'Wave® Purple' and Cosmos 'Cosmic Orange', and others fall out of favor. But it is a nice way to give something new a try in your garden.
There are only 3 winners in 2008: Osteospermum F1 'Asti White', Viola 'Skippy XL Plum Gold' and Eggplant 'Hansel'. The ASS slogan is "Tested Nationally and Proven Locally". Whether they'll turn out to be winners in your garden is still to be proven, but see if any sound like a good fit for you garden plans this year.
