Containers for Creating a Gardening Gift Basket

By , About.com Guide

Creating a gardening gift basket starts with a great container. That shouldn't be so hard. Gardeners are always looking for containers to put something in, whether it’s a plant, cut flowers, the tomato harvest, seed packets, tools or... well you get the idea. This is a gift basket and baskets will work just fine, but take a look around and see if something else doesn’t strike your fancy. Return to Gift Basket Ideas.

1. Handmade Wicker Basket

Yup, they still make bushel baskets and you can even pick a peck. Or maybe your gardener would treasure a simple, flat garden cady for toting those prized vegetables and flowers in from the garden. THe Peterboro Basket Company has been making well crafted handmade baskets since 1854. These are baskets meant to be used, but they're beautiful enough to display, too.

2. Grow Bags

Grow bags are a relatively new arrival on the gardening market. They're designed to take the place of simple plastic bags. These are made of double-layer polypropylene, which is breathable and allows excess water to flow out. They collapse when not needed and can be set up anywhere. These are sized for tomatoes, but they make grow bags for just about any vegetable. The tomato bag is 14-1/2 inches square x 16 inches H, which would make a nice sized basket. It comes in blue and poppy orange.

3. Tub Trug

Trug have become the go-to multi-purpose garden tool and they make a great gift basket too. This 3 1/2 gallon size will hold and protect everything you put in. This style is made of polyethylene and comes in a variety of cheerful colors. Fill it with gifts and the your gardener can fill it with weeds, water, tools and all sorts of necessities.

4. Garden Tool Bag

There’s still nothing like a tool tote bag for keeping your tools handy, while carrying them with you. The pockets make a fun gift bag too. This model is made of cotton canvas. I particularly like the padded handle.

5. Iron and Glass Terrarium

If you’d like something more ornamental, what about a glass terrarium. They’re lovely enough to be a gift on their own, but tuck in a few well chosen treats and it’s even more special. This one is mine, but here's a lovely white  washed iron and glass model. It measures 21" H x 17" W x 9.5" D.
