Definition:
The word 'cultivar' is a contraction of the words 'cultivated variety'. It refers to plants within a species that are bred with distinct characteristics.
Some cultivars gain popularity because they are particularly pest resistant or because they are know to thrive in certain areas. Other cultivars are valued simply for their beauty or fragrance. The plant industry sustains itself by continually creating new cultivars.
Cultivar names are designated with single quotes, such as Sedum Autumn Joy.
Examples: I keep on the lookout for new cultivars of my favorite plant, coreopsis, to add to my garden.
