What is a Plant Rhizome?

Definition: A horizontal, underground stem. Plants that spread by rhizomes can often spread quickly.
Also Known As: Many plants grown from rhizomes are often grouped in with flowering bulbs.
Examples:
Many invasive plants spread by rhizomes, for example ground ivy. There are also many cultivated plants that travel by rhizomes, such as Lily-of-the-valley.
