Gaillardia tend to be easy going prolific bloomers. I always thought they got the common name ‘Blanket Flower’ because of there distinctive concentric color pattern, but ‘Mesa Yellow has all golden petals with a slightly darker orange disk.
This is the first F1 Gaillardia from seed. Tested were particularly taken with Mesa Gold’s mounded growing habit. It doesn’t spread out as much as other Gaillardia varieties, making it especially nice for smaller gardens and containers, where it tends to drape. In the garden, it holds it’s flowering stalks up well without flopping and makes a nice cut flower. It held its own against bad weather - wind, rain - and bloomed throughout the season. Even better, ‘Mesa Gold’ starts blooming 2-3 weeks earlier than other Gaillardia varieties.
