Can You Trust a Groundhog?

By February 2, 2013

Follow me on:

I don't have the best relationship with groundhogs. Well, they seem to love me, but I remain ambivalent. However I do think animals are often more in tune with the weather than people, even gardeners. Punxsutawney Phil predicts an early spring! I'll take the good news and run with it. Phil may not always be right, but even if he's wrong, it's only 46 days until spring. We can hang in there.

That's the news from Gobbler's Knob. Has anyone heard from Buckeye Chuck , Shubenacadie Sam, Wiarton Willie or Staten Island Chuck? Confirmation by these other well regarded spring prognosticators would lend more weight to the prediction.

Well then, it must be so!

I noticed a lot of geese flying north last month. I keep meaning to look up whether that means something.

Buckeye Chuck agrees with Phil: early spring. (Hmmm… Global warming?)

Linda, let’s see if they’re actually right. It’s 9 F. here today, with the wind chill, despite my faith in groundhogs.

jj, I’m with you. Although if it did come tomorrow, I’d be complaining that I’m not ready. Still, not such a terrible problem to have, is it?
