Winter is definitely here, and whether that means dreaming of your garden or the start of your gardening season, there are a few things we all need to do. The first is to check on and bulbs or vegetables still in storage. In cold climates, we need to do this monthly. Check that nothing is rotting or drying out. If you stored vegetables, I hope you've started using them. Now is the time to enjoy some squash soup or the almost fresh picked flavor of root crops.
If your growing season is kicking into gear, make sure you use up the last of your stored veggies. Don't waste them! And don't be like me and forget to plant the bulbs and tubers you stored away. Last year my poor Cannas started growing in their boxes, in the basement. If they hadn't poked through, I would never have remembered them.
It's even time to think about adding some more summer blooming bulbs like Agapanthus, Gladiolus and Caladium. Even if you can't get them in the ground for a few more months, at least you can get first pick from the catalogs. The promise of beauty and hearty food is a great way to start the new year.
