I did a terrible thing this weekend. I read the new book "Why Grow That When You Can Grow This?" and now I have to move. I need a much larger yard.
I love the idea behind this book. Why settle for the plants they put front and center at the garden center when there are so many alternatives that give you a longer season of interest, lower maintenance and a more interesting garden? Andrew Keys coaxes us to look past the forsythia, blue spruce and pachysandra and feast our eyes on Kerrias, Umbrella pines and creeping Mahonia. I think you'll find the alternatives he gives us hard to resist. I'll have to wait another 4 months before I can start shopping and planting, but I'd better start making room for them now.
