Just Add Water - Forcing Paperwhites

Paperwhites, a small, pale Narcissus, are one of the easiest bulbs to force indoors. They're lovely and some people find them very fragrant but I have to confess, to me they smell like an electrical wire is starting to burn. Still, I enjoy seeing them around the holidays and into early spring, when I'm itching to get back outdoors.

They are quick and easy to force indoors. You don't even need soil. Of course they will grow outdoors, too. Since they don't need a good chilling, they're a nice choice for warmer areas. We're so used to seeing them in pots that we forget they also make wonderful outdoor flowers. If you're hoping to have some in bloom this winter, now's the time to get started.
