Raking Up Free Mulch

By , About.com GuideOctober 22, 2012

Follow me on:

There was a time when I was a good dobie and I raked and bagged all the leaves on my lawn. Silly me. All those wonderful fallen leaves will eventually turn into crumbly garden goodness - leaf mold.

Don't let the name put you off. Leaf mold, like its cousin compost, is a gold mine for the garden. Plus it requires almost no effort at all and, as I said, it's free! Win-Win-Win! Soon you'll be out scooping up your neighbors' discarded leaves, to make more. Colleen Vanderlinden tells us how to get started making leaf mold.

when we had a truck, we made the rounds through different neighborhoods and picked up their bagged leaves before the trash man got them. we would always ask before taking them so no-one would think we were up to no good! sometimes they would help us load them! its hard for us to get them now, but we are always on the lookout.

You’re not alone there. I wish I had a truck at this time of year. My neighbors rake their leaves to the curb weeks before the pick up date. I’d have plenty of time to make the rounds. I think seeing my plant lights on at all hours has convinced them I’m already up to no good.
