If you garden in a warm climate, now is the time to start visiting your garden centers. It may be hot, but you still want to see what's available and make your plans.
Cool climate gardeners, it's getting to be your last chance to shop for bargains. Northern garden centers need to make room for Halloween decorations. The tables will be full of mums, in a few weeks, and prices for remaining garden plants are as low as they're going to go. A lot of the plants look a little tired from spending their summer in a pot, but you'll be surprised how quickly they'll adjust, once you pop them in the ground.
If your garden is already bursting at the seams and you don't think you can squeeze in anything new, keep in mind that when fall rolls around, most of the flowers in bloom now will be exhausted. So if you really can't resist shopping for a bargain, consider some of these late season bloomers. They'll have just enough time to make themselves at home in your garden and they'll thank you with color, just when you need it.
