I'm a sucker for the Olympics. I love athletics and I have so much admiration for the talented folks who devote so much time training to be the best. I've known competitive athletes and their training regime doesn't leave much time for relaxing, so I was caught off guard when I got a press release telling me about a handful of U.S. Olympian gardeners. We all know gardening is restorative , but it also takes a lot of time and commitment.
So extra kudos to rower Susan Fancia, who gardens for the diversion from training, cyclist Dotsie Bausch, a gardener and vegetarian, rower Mary Whipple, another vegetarian who is starting an herb garden, volleyball player Todd Rogers, who gardens as part of his efforts to eat well and swimmer Natalie Coughlin, who not only has an extensive garden, but also has 5 chickens in her family.
Best of luck to all the Olympic athletes!
