Being a happy hermit at heart, I am a total slacker with all things social, not the least with social media. But I'm finding myself seduced by all the little tidbits of information I pick up, not to mention the luscious photography and beguiling inquisitiveness of other gardeners online. So I thought I'd share a few things a little birdie told me on Twitter today.
@punkrockgardens reminded me to keep an eye out for late blight on my tomatoes. I got a great idea for reusing breath mint boxes from @NikiJabbour. And in a topic on killing ants, I learned from truly @BackyardWisdom that adult ants cannot eat solid food. Who knew? And as a tangent, did you know it was National Insect Week? (Does that mean they'll all go away next week?)
If you're out in the Tweetsphere, I'd love to hear what you tweet about. Oh, and I'm at @About_Gardening.

I’m kind of a happy hermit myself, but I always have time to talk to other gardeners (and listen too). I have a tip for people who need a little umbrella over a bistro table. Use an umbrella! Buy a big wood rod at the hardware store. The kind you use for clothing in a closet. Attach two spring clips to the rod. Usually they are used for the handles of brooms, racks etc. Insert the rod in the hole in your bistro table. Now you can attach the umbrella for sun when you need it and still detatch the umbrella for rainy days.
Well that’s clever. You can bring it indoors during really bad weather, too.
My father rigged up an umbrella over his grill. This was years ago, when over-sized umbrellas were hard to find and expensive. I lived in NYC then, where hogging the sidewalk is a cultivated skill, and I could get them pretty cheap. He would have liked your spring clip suggestion.
