Tell-Tale Signs it's Time to
Divide Your Perennial Plants

My early spring caught me off guard. I have to shift out of dreaming mode and into action without a plan. Who am I kidding, I never know where to start first. One task that I tend to delay is dividing. I always mean to get to it early, but once I see a plant growing, I hate to disturb it.

Unfortunately letting it grow another season isn't always good for the plant. Once plants are showing signs that they need division they are already struggling for survival. So how do you know when to divide perennial plants? Certainly the dead center of the ornamental grass in the photos is a good give away. Here are some more tips on when to divide perennials and how to divide them.

You are so right! I desperately need to split up some perennials but I avoid the task because it is difficult to dig a large clump of plants on my own and they look quite tidy now. But when I realize that they are fighting for survival as you say, my conscience is pricked and I must get to it SOON!

I hate to disturb my plants too, but knowing it is for their own good helps me to do this. Thanks for the tip.

Judy, their new plant collection is supposed to be available around Mother’s Day. If they do anything, I would guess it would be around then. But I wouldn’t expect too much. They still seem to view gardening as outdoor decorating.
