My first daffodil bloomed yesterday. It's 10 days earlier than last year's daffs, but later than 2010's. While we're enjoying our spring bulbs, the garden centers are filling up with summer flowering bulbs. Gladiolas, caladiums, canna and elephant ears... I can never resist buying a few packages, but then I feel guilty letting them die off in the fall and I wind up having that much more to store for the winter. Oh, well.
Is it time to plant summer flowering bulbs outdoors yet? Probably not. Most won't start to grow until the weather is reliably warm. A good rule of thumb is to plant summer flowering bulbs about the same time you plant tomatoes outdoors. But if you stored summer flowering bulbs for the winter and you want to get them started indoors before you re-plant them outdoors, it's time to get moving.
