I’m rather surprised by the nominees in this category. I haven’t heard of three of the five. Park and Johnny’s are the familiar names. Where are some of the bigger seed catelogs like Harris, Burpee, Thompson & Morgan or Stokes? Hmm…

These are the 5 catalogs that received the most nominations. I guess you didn’t participate during the nomination phase.

Thompson and Morgan had a big seed scandal, and Harris and Burpee don’t guarantee non-gmo, nor do they sell large amounts of open pollinated or organic seed. Zeitgeist doesn’t care how big your business is.

Take a look at Territorial Seeds. Their catalog is fabulous (available online) and their service is great. Here in the Pacific Northwest, they’re the go-to seed provider.

I have purchased from Territorial Seed since they began and have always has great success with all that I have received–both seeds and garlic and potatoes. When other plants from other companies didn’t do well here in the Pacific Northwest, theirs did. Their catalogue is excellent and huge! I can find all the open-pollinated varities I want and trust the seed to produce well. I don’t grow and hybrids. They also sell any natural fertilizers and other products that I may need. They also sell a wide variety of how-to books if they are needed.

Received Baker Heirloom seed catalog this year. Was so impressed with all the info in it. It was the first seed order this year. Looking forward to planting the seeds. They have my favorite tomatoes, Prudens purple and Arkansas Traveler. Trying Black cherry and morning sun. I also an faithful to Johnny’s and to Parks for my flower seeds.

Give Baker Creek seeds a chance if you haven’t already. Their full-color, glossy catalog is worth it just for the pictures. You will see plants from all over the world. I’ve seen plants in their catalog I had no idea existed.

Very educational for the kids, too. Many kids have never seen pink tomatoes, yellow radishes, blue melons, white bell peppers or purple and green string beans. The variations seem endless, and remind people that nature is incredibly diverse, and veggies need not be limited to the few green and orange varieties we always see in the grocery store.

(17) Leland Gage says:

Some of the companies listed are not known to guarantee being Non GMO. I believe one is /was owned by big oil. It is unfortunate that more people are not familiar with the smaller companies like High Mowing Organic Seed in Vermont (organic and non GMO, to use as an example). Get out there growers and do some research.

(18) Hebron Acres says:

I’m sure there is fine work behind all these great seed companies. I would like to encourage votes to Baker Creek Heirloom Seed Co. Great work to support the healthful food movement, seed saving, anti-GMO and history preservation.

We’ve ordered and started their seeds this year for a charity urban garden to feed families trying to make ends meet. We’re pleased as punch with the performace of their seeds and look forward to the smiling faces of families we give the food to.

Go Baker Creek!
