Easy Orchids

I am notorious for not watering my houseplants, so I was surprised when someone suggested I try growing orchids. I remember when they were considered prima donas. Actually orchids are pretty low maintenance. They like humidity more than water, need thorough but infrequent watering and bloom for weeks on end. About.com's Guide to Houseplants, Jon VanZile, tells us just how easy it is to grow exquisite orchids and make it look like you're a houseplant pro. Thanks, Jon.

Orchids like to shower. So next time bring them in with you. In Hawaii we always have the rain and hummidity so we don’t need to do this, but they really like a shower and Orchid Bloom.

I was given an orchid last year for Christmas and I killed it, the first plant that I have killed and thought that there is no ways that I am going to try it again, well this year I was given another one and tough wood this one I have not killed, I have been doing some reading up on them and have found that ones doesn’t have to water them so much as what you would with any other in door plant so I water them now once or twice a week and it seems to be doing the trick, thanks for the advice its a big help

For people with pollen allergies, orchids have got to be the ideal flowering houseplant.
There are so many varieties of orchids it’s hard to pick one as my favorite. However, the only ones that I can successfully get to rebloom, without too much coddling, are phalenopsis. I’ve had some that were in bloom for more than a year and friends were beginning to think it was fake because it lasted so long.

I did not realize they weren’t bothersome to people with allergies. That’s good to know.

That’s funny, but I agree, sometimes they are so perfect, they do look fake. Beautiful, but fake.

I’m jealous if you live in an area where you can grow orchids outdoors. My spent a lot of time in the bathroom, the only place I could give them the humidity they love.
