What to Make of
Patty Pan Squash

It's about time for the zucchini to start taking over the garden. Even if you love zucchini, some variety is always welcome. I've written about other summer squash varieties before, but whenever I show photos of patty pan squash, someone asks what it is. Even people who recognize patty pan can be totally lost as to how to prepare it. It certainly has a unique shape. Kids think they look like flying saucers and just might eat them, if you don't call them squash.

Like all summer squash, patty pan is easy to grow and quite prolific. If you're growing tired of zucchini, leave some space in the garden for patty pan.

And then make great use of it:

I use patty pan squash with zucchini for a really yummy cinnamon squash bread. My kids turned up their noses at it until they tasted it. Now they want me to make it all the time.

My family loves patty pan. I slice it into steaks, brush it with some EVO and put pork flavored Shake and Bake on it. Just toss it in the oven and it makes a wonderful meatless main course!!
