It's not looking pretty in my yard. There are piles of sandy, brown snow and flattened shrubs with branches going off in all directions. But every now and then I get a whiff of mud and I know it won't be long before I'm out there cleaning up.

We had a question about a year ago on whether you do the bulk of your garden clean-up at the end of the season or the beginning. Very often it comes down to the big 3 -  time, energy and weather. However there are a few plants that can be fussy about when they are cut back; mums like to snuggle under their foliage during winter and phlox will harbor mildew spores if left standing. Whether you are waking them up or putting them to sleep, here are some tips for dealing with your perennial plants right now.
