July in the Garden
A Regional Gardening Almanac

Wednesday July 1, 2009
July is an unpredictable month in the garden. About all you can count on is humidity. Gardeners just have to play it by ear. You know there will be vegetables to harvest, flowers to deadhead and a new crop of weeds. Here’s a list of garden chores to make help your garden weather the heat of summer. Most importantly, keep a close eye on pests and disease, then sit back and enjoy your garden and all the efforts you put in earlier in the year to get it where it is now.

My favorite blooming/scented flower has to be the “Josee Lilac.” I no longer live in an area where most lilacas wil bloom. However, the Josee is a never fail even in our triple digit heat. (Which we have had a lot of lately). I am sorry to hear so much of the North East has had a slow start to your gardening season. Each region has it’s own gardening issues and I promise you that were it with in my ability I would gladly share some of our over abundant heat for just a little of your chill. You need to send your damp elsewhere however, the humidity here is very high and will be until fall at least. I am 59 and was born here. If I live another 59 years I still will not be comfortable with the hot and sticky feeling yielded my our humidity levels. I found Phonix, AZ to be so dry I found it hard to breath.

By the way to people of P and Phoenix and Scottsdale When you are obese like I am, there is no such thing as dry heat. We sweat so much we create our own micro climates.

But, even if I were in Antartica I would be trying to grow something. It’s just what makes a gardener a gardener.

Good earth to you all,
Michael

I wish I could send some rain your way, but I’m sure I’ll miss it come August. I don’t remember ever being satisfied with the rain. I’m longing for sunshine and heat and today my brother said, “Hasn’t it been a nice cool spring?” I guess “Grow where you’re planted” is appropriate here.
