Long before most perennial plants can be bothered putting in an appearance in the spring, Pulmonaria is putting on a show. If it weren't for some lingering snow, I'm sure mine would be getting ready to bloom right now and I'm getting pretty impatient. I think the way bloomingwriter, Jodi DeLong, juxtaposes her fondness for the relief they provide the color starved gardener with the current situation in her garden about sums it up.
Pulmonaria are low growers and they love shade, but they're no wall flowers. The speckled foliage and vivid flowers entice you to bend lower and take notice. There are dozens of varieties (and more being bred) so there's a good chance there's a Pulmonaria perfect for your garden. Take a look.

I love Pulmonaria! I have 3 varietys. The one I see the least is a bright strawberry colored one I have that is a few inches taller. Pulmonaria also spreads very easily, but is manageable.
I discovered this charmer at The Red Dragon Nursery, Underwood, near Lilydale, Tasmania. Only this weekend and fell in love with it. It was the only one there. So will be planted into our garden today. Am sure we will be planting some more varieties.
Trudy, it sounds like Lilydale has the perfect climate for growing Pulmonaria. I hope it does well for you. I think you’re just about heading into spring, now, so hopefully there will be more popping up in nurseries.
I wish I was just heading into spring. There’s just never enough time in summer.
Yes, the name lungwort does not inspire gardeners, but the foliage and flowers should. This is a wonderful plant. I love it.
This is such a beautiful group of plants. every garden should have them.
