Gardening Question of the Week: What are Rose Hips?
Thursday October 16, 2008
Never comment on how beautiful the hips are on a rose bush, unless the person you are with knows what rose hips are. They can become very insulted. I’m a big fan of rose hips, although we don’t get to see a lot of them because gardeners tend to keep their roses well pruned. But these orangy-red berries aren’t just lovely to behold, they taste pretty darn good too. And they’re surprisingly easy to use in everything from tea to soup to dessert. What are rose hips? Well, I’ll tell you...

I have loved rose hips for years (over the hill hippie). They do make a very good tea but I suggest making a large batch at the time because of the brewing time. I also recommend sliceing and drying them first. You use fewer hips when dried.
Another thing to avoid saying to a woman is “nice tats” as in tatoos. I was miss understood and she hit me so hard my son was born with a black eye.
And they have so much vitamin C. I tend to cut and dry them and then mix them in a tea with echinacea and vitex and st. johns wort for a nice winter upper tea. Body and soul.
