Plant of the Week: Sambucus

Elderberry or Sambucus, old-fashioned shrubs that are getting a lot of new attention because of the dark leaved varieties, like that are currently in nurseries. Some on wrote to me just last week, asking when and how she should prune her Black Lace Sambucus. I found that funny, because the cold winds and rabbits usually keep mine in fine form. But those of you who are not so lucky as to have a bitter winter and hungry rabbits should think about pruning yours any time now, before the new growth starts in earnest. If you don't have on of these gorgeous shrubs in your garden, give Sambucus a second look.
