How Do You Drain Water Off Lawns?

Monday February 25, 2008
Two years ago, I had the brilliant idea to relocate my vegetable garden right behind my house. How convenient. We lifted all the sod and worked in plenty of compost until the garden was the fluffy, well draining soil of garden text book fables. It is so well draining that for the past 2 springs the winter snow melt has drained right into my basement. Oops. So I began poking around About Landscaping looking for drainage solutions. David offers advice on buried drainage pipes and French drains, but my interest was peaked by the dry creek solution. I will probably move my vegetable garden - again - but a dry creek is so charming, I’m considering it for a soggy corner of my yard. If you’re yard has occasion to turn into a bog, here are David's suggestions for draining water off lawns.

It’s not a naturally wet area and I don’t think that would solve my flooding problem. Water didn’t pool there until I disturbed the soil in that one stretch of foundation planting. I’m thinking of replanting some thirsty shrubs.
