Does Any of Your Garden Harvest Make it to Your Holiday Table?

Sunday November 11, 2007
Gardeners have a special appreciation for harvest festivals. Holidays, like Thanksgiving, are centered around the food being served, even though most of the vegetables on the table came from the grocery store. Sometimes I think they should move Thanksgiving up a few months, to when the first tomato ripens and you can here that collective "Ah" going up in gardens across the U.S.

My garden has long since gone to bed, but I usually manage to stow away a few potatoes and a squash or two to share with my guests and certainly my turkey is seasoned with herbs from my garden. Does any of your garden harvest make it to your holiday table? Tell us how you share your bounty in the 'Comments' section below.

(1) Cathy says:

Each year we pick the peppers and greeen tomatoes and wrap them to ripen for the salad on Thanksgiving. I put up corn, green beans and okra along with blackberries each summer for our harvest dinner on Thanksgiving. Our best meal comes during the summer when everything on the table is from the garden. That is our Thanksgiving dinner!

I use home grown onions in my stuffing. We also have potatoes and butternut squash. The squash comes to the table as pumpkin pies; no one seems to notice the difference. Home canned green beans and frozen corn are also a staple at our Thanksgiving table.

I manage to put my green tomatoes in paper sacks so that we have fresh tomatoes up until Thanksgiving. My lettuce, arugula and parsley is still going strong until the snow cover.
