Marie, I love your site and visit often. I was wondering if you could put a map of the Zones on your site. I haven’t had much luck on the internet so far. I’m a relatively new gardener in a new part of Southern California and it’s still a bit of trial and error for me. Any help would be appreciated. God bless, Michele

Hi Michele,

You’ll find an explanation of the USDA Zones and a link to the map here.

Since you live in Southern California, you might also want to check out Sunset’s Climate Zones. Sunset Magazine didn’t think the USDA went far enough in its zone divisions and set up their own. The Sunset zones are often used in western states and will give you an even better idea of your growing conditions.

And you’ll want to read up on xeriscape or waterwise gardening, because you can’t count on rain in Southern Cal.

I hope you’ll enjoy learning more about gardening. The forum on this site is very active, especially in the winter when most of us don’t have the luxury of your weather. So if you want more opinions, post a note in there. And of course, write to me anytime.

Marie–
