Magnolias - Spring Flowering Charmers
Monday February 19, 2007
Magnolia trees are associated with the Old South and gentler lifestyle. But there are plenty of magnolia trees for cooler climates and less hospitably locations. David Beaulieu has featured the Saucer Magnolia, Magnolia x soulangiana, with its impressive pink and white, spring blooms. Saucer magnolias grow in Zones 4 - 9, although they can lose buds to late spring frosts and winds. I hadn’t considered David’s suggestion to avoid planting them where they’d have a southern exposure, to delay blooming long enough to get past the period of frost danger.

I’ve a Salicipolia for about ten yrs. and I just love, when I see it sprout I know that Wpring is just around the corner. about three yrs, agoI read about a nursery in Michigan is trying ato raise magnolia that have “green” flowers. Is this true if could you let me know, I would like to pair it with my white Salicifolia. Thanks!
Sorry, I did some digging around, but I haven’t come across anything about a magnolia with green flowers. There’s the ‘Green Star’ magnolia, but it has white/pink flowers. However it is hardy to Zone 5.
Anyone else know of a green flowered magnolia?
My magnolia hasn’t flowered in 2 years. It seems to be growing fine.
