A Winter Crop of Lettuce

Wednesday November 29, 2006
Some gardeners find lettuce boring. They claim all lettuce tastes the same. But one thing most gardeners can agree on is that freshly picked lettuce has a juicy crispness you will never find in store bought lettuce. It’s also a beautiful crop that can hold its own against any of the new foliage plants on the market.

All that and lettuce can be grown almost anywhere. True, lettuce doesn’t like extreme heat. But it’s the cool season now for many gardeners and the perfect time to squeeze in a few plants. If it’s the cold season in your garden, try growing lettuce indoors. Lettuce is one of the easiest plants to geminate from seed, it requires minimal sunlight, it’s shallow rooted and the leaf varieties can be grown tightly in a pot for ‘cut and come again’ harvests. Consider lettuce a winter crop.
