Wouldn't You Rather Be Mowing?
Of course not. Even with a cup holder on your lawn tractor, there are better things to do on the weekend then ride in circles around your lawn. It seems this summer you’re either in the rain belt and mowing every few hours, or you’re in the drought belt and mulching more dust than clippings.
You’ve probably heard that lawn mowers and other gas powered lawn tools add to our smog problems by giving off significant amounts of carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides. But did you realize the average lawn mower emits as much smog-forming pollution in one hour as eight new cars traveling at 55 miles per hour. (Source: NY Farms! News to Share, 6-16-06)
Kill 2 birds with one stone by landscaping in cooperation with your site and climate and reducing your need to mow. We’ve already considered the idea that moss can be a positive part of your lawn. Now let’s see if we can open our minds to clover, ornamental grasses or no lawn at all. Even the front yard can look attractive fully planted in waterwise ornamentals that require no mowing. Think of it. No mowing at all! Ever!

What about those of us with two acre lawns? How are we supposed to turn all of that into gardens when the cost of landscaping is so high?
That’s a good point. I guess you’ll have to start small and wait for sales on big space items, like trees and shrubs. Or get a goat.
