Featured Pest: Rose Chafers and Japanese Beetles

Wednesday July 6, 2005
We had such fun responding to favorite wildflowers and weeds, I thought I'd try a serious subject. I really hate to say 'Featured Pest'. Chafers (or shafers) and Japanese Beetles do so much damage to so many different plants, the word feature just doesn't seem to apply. But there they are. There are chemical sprays that work in the short term. Beneficial nematodes can lessen this year's infestation, but you know more will fly in next year. And there's always hand picking and a jar of soapy water.

What's your favorite, tried and true method for getting rid of these perennial pests? I think my favorite is to get one of those pheromone traps and put it in my neighbor's yard. (Yes, I'm just kidding. Of course I'm kidding.)

Be a good neighbor and share your tips with us in the Rose Shafer thread on the Gardening Forum.
